Freshman English Term 1
This class involves literature, grammar, and vocabulary.
Literature: Term One involves short stories and the novel Call of the Wild. Term One ends with a poetry unit and the epic poem The Odyssey.
Short stories: "The Cask of the Amontillado", "The Most Dangerous Game", "The Necklace", "The Interlopers", "The Machine That Won the War", and "The Man to Send Rain Clouds".
Short story exam covers themes, literary terms, and basic questions about the story.
Lord of the Flies: Students will read the text in-class and for homework. A study guide with questions will also be assigned. Quizzes on the daily readings may also occur. The unit ends with a test on the story and a paper.
Poetry Units: Unit 1: "Sonnet 30" pg. 960, "On the Grasshopper and the Cricket" pgs. 958-959, "There is a Longing" pgs. 170-171, "I Hear America Singing" pg. 172, "The Jabberwocky"pgs. 400-401, "Uphill" pg. 926, "Caged Bird" pg. 293, "We Never Know How High We Are" pg. 295 Unit 2: "Sympathy" pg. 292, "Women" pg. 327, "Maggie and milly and molly and may" pg. 329, "The Eagle" pg. 906, "Dream Deferred" pg. 904, and "Dreams" pg. 905. Both units include application of literary terms and questions about the poems. A test will be given at the end of the unit.
The Odyssey: In class we will read the Odyssey. Questions will be assigned and a final test will be given at the end of the epic poem.
Grammar: Term One involves nouns, pronouns, verbs (action, linking, transitive, intransitive), adjectives, and adverbs. Worksheets will be given and test will be given at the end of each unit.
Vocabulary: Lists are given on Monday of each week. Worksheets will be completed through the week with a test on Friday. These are words that students will find in the literature that is read in this class. These words are also included in many standardized tests including the ACT and SAT.
