Hello, my name is Sean Jung (that's me to the left), and that's a pic of my family (at right) with my wife Sara, son Nathan, and daughter Lilly. My son adopted Chewbacca into the family when we made our first trip to Disney World in the summer of 2018. The 2019-'20 school year will begin my 10th at UGHS, and 17th overall in the classroom. I look forward to another great school year teaching mathematics, coaching soccer, and helping to make kids' lives better in any way I can.
I graduated from Cardinal Stritch University in 2001 with a BS in Mathematics, and then went on to earn my MA in Mathematics Education from Walden University in 2007. At the onset of my teaching career I taught for two years at New Berlin West HS in New Berlin, WI before getting married and moving to Caledonia, WI. I then taught for 5 years at Grayslake Middle School in Grayslake, IL, during which I went through a professional transformation during my "middle school" years, changing my entire approach to teaching, learning, and professional development. For the past several years in the classroom I've been fine-tuning a hands-on, interactive, discovery learning approach to mathematics that is intended to engage students through experiences, activities, and cooperative learning. The goal is for students to develop a conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts rather than redundantly taking notes and being told to memorize them. Though not perfected, I have seen major growth in both my students and myself while incorporating these methods in recent years, and recent changes to the Union Grove math department only solidifies this approach.
For the past five school years I've been blessed with the opportunity to teach AP Calculus, an opportunity that I've looked forward to my entire teaching career. My hope is that my own enthusiasm and passion for mathematics spills over into the classroom and inspires students to pursue mathematical truth and rigor beyond basic Calculus.
Additionally I am the varsity boys and girls soccer coach at UGHS and look for any and every opportunity to play the game in my free time. The boys have made tremendous strides over the past 7 years, having won just once in 2012 to earning a state rank as high as 5th in 2018 along with their first WIAA Regional title. On the girls' side considerable improvements have also been made, most recently with an 18-2-1 record in the spring of 2019 that saw the ladies become the first team in history to go a perfect 9-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference earning back-to-back soccer conference titles (also won in 2018). The girls also received a state-ranking as high as 3rd in the WIAA polls.. Links to both the Boys' and Girls' websites are below.
At home I enjoy spending time with my wife of 12 years Sara, son Nathan (my 9 year-old), and daughter Lilly (6 years old). Nathan is as inquisitive as he is intelligent, sometimes terrifyingly so, and loves Tae Kwon Do and Legos. Lilly is currently enrolled in dance and gymnastics classes, and still loves those Disney princesses. They've changed my life, as children typically do, and have made me a better teacher and better person as a result.
